The main uses for gif files is for images you want to have a transparency on and animations. We will not be covering animtions in this tutorial. If you have an image that you wish to save the transparency on so it will look good on your tiled backgroud this tutorial will show you the basics of saving gif files.
First thing is you donot want to hit save as then save as a gif ... to keep the transparencey you must export the gif and configure it along the way.
To export hit this button on your web tool bar in PSP
if your web tool bar isn't showing you can right click on your PSP tool bars
and turn it on by checking it. Or you can go to File/Export/GIF optimizer
When you hit the export gif button a optimizing window will pop up with 5 tabs .Transparency, Partial Transparency, Colors, Format, Download Times.
We will really only be concerned with the first 3
Under the first tab(Transparency) check to make sure that Existing image or layer transparency is checked

Under the second tabe (Partial Transparency)Check "Use full transparency
for pixels below"insert the number that suits best here play with it a
bit until you get it to where you can keep most of the shadows and stuff without
having too much of a solid color around the edges.
Also chose Yes blend with the background color then chose a color that goes
best with the background image you wish to place it on.

The third tab (Colors) you will set how much dithering you want *hint the more
dithering the better the image quality*
You will want to chose Optimized Octree and make sure you have "Include
windows colors"check these will all give you better image quality.

The fourth tab lets you set the format if you want the image to slowly come into focus then chose progressive
The fifth tab shows you your filet size and aprx download times depending on connection speeds
when you are finished click on OK , name your file and save to the directory of your choice.
